First Team Debuts

Manager Jim McLean decided to stick with the team who beat Hearts the previous week for this one at Somerset Park.

Ayr took the lead after just 15 minutes in this match when big George McLean collected a neat chip from Graham and he slotted home. Five minutes from the interval Ayr moved further ahead. This time Copland pulled down George McLean as he bore down on goal. George McLean picked himself up and scored the penalty kick that was awarded.

United substituted White for Markland and went in search of a goal that would inspire hope. Indeed, while they may only have been looking for one to spark a comeback, United scored two in five minutes to level the game. First, Sandy White scored in the 70th minute and then Ian Mitchell equalised five minutes later. However, the parity lasted no more than a minute when George McLean scored his hat-trick and then with five remaining George McLean got an incredible fourth goal to seal the match for Ayr United.
