Five minutes into the first half, Ronnie Glavin hit the post with a header from an Alfie Conn corner and the woodwork came into play shortly after when Johannes Edvaldsson rattled the crossbar with a header. The rebound fell to Tom McAdam who watched his header cleared off the line by Billy Kirkwood. A frenetic start which saw United's backs to the wall. Chances continued for Celtic throughout the first period as Hamish McAlpine and his defence frequently scrambled the ball to safety. The opening goal came just before the half time whistle. A shot from Alfie Conn was hooked into the body of Paul Hegarty, prompting the linesman to raise his flag and alert referee Smith to award a penalty for handball. Andy Lynch did the honours for the home side to make it 1-0.United came out of the traps for the second half a different side. With Celtic legs perhaps tiring from their midweek cup game, United looked the more energetic side and one minute in, John Holt forced a save from Roy Baines. Shortly after, a Graeme Payne free kick forced a brilliant save from Baines at full stretch. It came as no surprise when the Terrors finally equalised on 74 minutes. A Roddie MacDonald push on Derek Addison went unpunished in the box, but from the resultant corner, Lynch headed into the path of Dave Narey who thrashed the ball into the net. United looked the more likely to snatch a winner in the dying stages, with Baines saving from Holt and Addison in quick succession, but the game ended in a draw.
