Hamilton who had become something of the whipping boys of the Premier Division employed tactics right from the start to ensure there would be no such embarrassment on this occasion. We made a bright enough start against the Accies massed defence with a first minute chance for Mixu Paatelainen and a Hamish French shot shortly afterwards. Allan Ferguson, a star in the visitor's goal that fumbled a 40 yard drive by Dave Narey but the ball squirmed past for a corner. Hamilton's tactics almost paid off in the dying minutes of the first half. Colin Harris made tracks up the right and his cross was headed past by Gallacher at the far post. The second half started with Dave Bowman on for Billy McKinlay and this was to prove significant in the 58th minute. Maurice Malpas squared the ball to Dave Bowman, whose powerful and dipping shot deceived Ferguson as it popped out of his grasp and over the line. That was the only chink we found in Accies defensive armour. As if to endorse their qualities, didn't Accies pick up a point at Pittodrie the following week, putting a proper perspective on our result.
