The new season kicked-off at Paisley with a satisfactory performance and result on a ground where we haven't always experienced the best of fortune. Certainly we started off extremely well and John Clark hooked just over after Alan Irvine provided the assist. The match however, fell a bit flat after that promising start. Alan Irvine and Alex Cleland had shots which were wide of the mark. Saints, who previously hadn't figured much as an attacking force, had a sustained spell of pressure as the interval approached. Only three minutes after the re-start we scored our first goal of the season. Kevin Gallacher was floored by Cooper. John Clark struck the resultant free-kick low and very hard. Money initially saved his shot, but couldn't prevent the ball squirming under his body and over the line. The frequency of United raids increased and Alan Irvine was unlucky to see Brian Hamilton head his netbound chip over the bar. The winger then created an opportunity for Mixu Paatelainen. Kevin Gallacher dummied his cross at the near post and only Godfrey's late intervention stopped Mixu from scoring at the far post. The third goal-line clearance came when Alan Irvine's cross was deflected goal wards but Wilson was on hand to clear the danger. Only a Neil Cooper header which went straight to Billy Thomson caused any real anxiety as we ran out more comfortable winners than the scoreline suggests.
