Two soft penalties, one for either side, told the story of this latest meeting with our great north east rivals. Taking everything into consideration a draw was probably a fair reflection of events. Chances perhaps occurred more often than normal in these matches. Ian McPhee saw a volley tipped over by Leighton and at the other end Joe Miller headed a Bett cross over, when it looked easier to score. In the 27th minute came the first of these two penalties. Hackett took on John Holt on the edge of the box. The ball appeared to come up and strike John on the arm. The referee awarded a penalty and Jim Bett scored from the spot. Back at the other end, Paul Hegarty's header from John Holt's free-kick was only just tipped over the bar by Leighton. Before the interval, a cut-back by Dave Narey was hit over the bar by lain Ferguson. Paul Sturrock shot wide early in the second half as we pursued an equaliser. However, Grant was unlucky to see his shot creep past the post. Kevin Gallacher replaced newcomer Alan Irvine. A Paul Sturrock run down the left almost brought us back on level terms, but his cross was headed wide by lain Ferguson. A minute later in the 75th minute, Kevin Gallacher scampered clear of Brian Irvine and his shot from outside the box struck Willie Miller's arm. Ian Redford sent Jim Leighton the wrong way from the spot. For a short spell, we threatened to take both points, but the Dons struck back and had a goal disallowed when Willie Falconer fouled Billy Thomson as he headed home. The United 'keeper then came to our rescue to block a shot from Peter Nicholas from point-blank range.
