Milestones

United's visit to Love Street was a battle for a UEFA Cup spot but the driving wind and hard pitch didn't produce the level of entertainment expected, not until the last three minutes that is.

Saints had taken the lead in the 36th minute when Frank McAvennie wriggled past Paul Hegarty and Dave Narey before lofting the ball over Hamish McAlpine from 25 yards out we equatised early in the second half when a Paul Sturrock chip struck Walker's arm and Eamonn Bannon sent Billy Thomson the wrong way from the spot.

Saints forced the game to us backed by a fierce wind and looked to have paid the penalty for leaving gaps at the back, when Davie Dodds whipped a Paul Sturrock cut back past Thomson with just three minutes left.

There was, however, last minute salvation for Saints. John Holt stumbled in the box and his arm struck the ball. Billy Stark dented our UEFA Cup hopes by slotting in the penalty to rescue a point.
