It had been almost a quarter of a century since the sides faced each other in the Cup and this time Cappielow was the venue as the pair met in the 1st round on January 30,1954. Once again both clubs were in the Second Division though United were in the midst of a wretched League season. That didn't prevent the Tannnadice men shrugging off the home side's pressure and even manage to take a shock lead with a Johnny Coyle goal right on half-time.

Morton laid siege on the United goal at the start of the second half and Alec Linwood sent a header bulleting past Edmiston. In fact the United 'keeper was the hero of the hour singlehandedly defying Morton. But Hannigan scored in the 65th minute. Ten minutes from time Johnny Coyle put United on level terms with a fine individual goal. That goal looked to have secured a deserved replay, but tragedy struck in the closing minutes when Hinshelwood's tentative shot goalwards was deflected past the heroic Edmiston by the right-back.
