Dundee United got off to a great start when, following a cross into the penalty area the Hearts' defence failed to get the ball clear and young wing half Jim Henry stepped in to crash the ball into the net. Hearts were not downhearted and they gradually took command and George Fleming, scored with a long range effort to equalise. The, George Fleming hit another from outside the 18 yards line, which also found the net and put Hearts into the lead.Dundee United took up the challenge after half time and they got their reward when Ian Mitchell dived to head the ball past Jim Cruickshank to make it 2-2. Hearts redoubled their efforts and when centre half Smith mis-judged a long clearance from Jim Cruickshank, Andy Lynch moved in quickly to take the ball round goalkeeper Mackay before stroking it into the net for the winner. Tommy Veitch replaced Jim Townsend (injured) late in the game while Dundee United had to bring an Scott for Henry in the first half. Peter Oliver and Hogg were booked in the second half. It was a great performance by both sides in a game that was full of incident and excitement.
