Both sides served up a late Christmas cracker as the home side went two ahead before the half way stage of the opening period, but found themselves pegged back by the interval. Even though United played most of the second half with only ten men, if was the Jerry Kerr's men who almost snatched both points. Hearts ended in front after six minutes when Denis Gillespie mis-kicked in front of goal, leaving Donald Ford with a simple chance. After 22 minutes United trailed even further. Moller lobbed a free-kick into the box and as the United defence ball watched, Jim Townsend ran in to head their second. Six minutes later, Ian Mitchell back-headed a corner into the net to reduce the arrears. Within ten minutes and United had equalised. Davie Wilson flighted over a free-kick which was headed home by former Hearts forward, Alan Gordon. Seven minutes after the break, Andy Holland was ordered off after a clash with Townsend, but United more than held their own to deservedly share the spoils.
