This was United's first game under the guidance of new manager Reggie Smith and he at least had the satisfaction of starting his Tannadice career with a win, United's second in ten outings at. Star of this win was in fact, a trialist, Dickie Cruickshank, from Aberdeen. He had a fine match and scored both goals. Naturlly, manager Reggie Smith was to sign the youngster but snags arose.
