First Team Debuts

Darren Jackson scored for the 25th time for the Club.

A historic occasion as United's Quarter-final Scottish Cup tie became the first domestic match to be screened live from Tannadice with BskyB covering the match. This was also the fifth successive season that we had faced our city rivals in the Scottish Cup. That alone must be a record never mind the fact that United after this game had triumphed in all five! Billy Dodds grabbed the lead for the Dark Blues in the 29th minute when he chipped the ball over Alan Main. At the opposite end Carson immediately tipped a Duncan Ferguson header over to keep his side in front. However, six minutes from half-time he was beaten when a long throw from Dave Bowman was headed on by Duncan Ferguson for Ray McKinnon to steer the ball into the far comer.

In the early stages of the second half, United stepped up a gear and edged in front ten minutes after the break when Jim McInally's long ball down field found Darren Jackson who out-paced Craib and deftly rounded Carson to tap the ball into the empty net. With fifteen minutes remaining the tie was sealed when John O'Neil scampered past Dinnie on the left and his inch-perfect cross was headed down past Carson by Duncan Ferguson.
