First Team Debuts

It was Scottish Cup day and United were looking to establish a first because they had never beaten the Jags in this competition. And for much of this game it looked as though it would take United at least a replay to break their duck as Alan Rough at his international best put up the shutters. Twice too, United had valid penalty claims turned down. Anderson sent Derek Addison flying in the first half and later a drive by lan Philip was stopped by Campbell's hand, but each time United's claims fell on deaf ears.

It wasn't all United though because Hamish McAlpine had to thwart Thistle on more than one occasion. However, stalemate was averted ten minutes from the end. Strong running by Derek Addison from saw the ball break to Davie Dodds who back-heeled the ball into the midfielder's path and Derek Addison hammered the ball low past Rough from the edge of the box for a timely and very welcome winner.

It's a cup welcome back to Tannadice today for what I see as ahnost the ultimate test for our side against Partick Thistle. I say that because I know full well that the big crowd atmosphere which helped stimulate the side into a fine performance against Rangers last week-end, is exremely unlikely to be repeated. Therefore it is all important that those of you with United leanings here today should help provide the sort of backing to the side which can mean so much. When touching on that subject of vocal support I always revert back to a call for patience, and yet I myself freely admit that I have always been guilty of wanting too much too soon from those under me here at Tannadice. But in the end we are all after the same end product - Dundee United - success, and I certainly appreciate that it is up to myself and the players to repay your backing with results.

Recent weeks of closer communication between you the fans and ourselves at the club have convinced me that that bond must be tightened even more in the future, I personally feel a new zest from what has already been achieved along those lines and a realisation that it might well have been better for the club in general had it been attempted earlier. Until just recently I was obsessed with getting a better United team put on the park each week, thinking that results and performances would speak for themselves with you our fans. Now that a better harmony is on the way between the terracing and the dressing room, I now realise just how vital you the support is !
