United went into this encounter without Dave Narey after their midweek triumph at Parkhead. The wind was swirling around Firhill as the teams came out to the applause of the 3000 in attendance.United got of to a bright start, winning two corners in the opening 60 seconds but Rough came out to collect both. The tangerines first effort came when Sturrock sent over an inviting cross but Bannon glanced the ball wide with his head. However, the were to rue that missed chance when Thistle moved into the lead in the 32nd minute. Whittaker began the move down the left flank. O'Hara managed to get the ball across and a defender seemed to miskick before George Clark screwed the ball into the net. United stormed back and equalised in the 44th minute. Bannon sent over a cross from the left and Willie Pettigrew threw himself to meet it and head home.Thistle went back into the lead in the 65th minute when Alex O'Hara blasted the ball high into the net from 12 yards. Kirkwood replaced Payne as United chased the equaliser. They got it in the 73rd minute when Paul Sturrock shot home after a great run by Dodds. Eamonn Bannon put United into the lead in the 77th minute with a spectacular shot. This concluded the scoring and sealed the win for United.
