Derek Johnstone, on loan from Chelsea, was the hero of United's first ever League Cup win over the Greenock club. After dominating the early play, United opened the scoring in the 25th minute. John Holt started the move and Davie Dodds pushed the ball into Derek Johnstone's path and the debutant crashed a tremendous shot past McDermott. United's second goal was equally as decisive with Ralph Milne cracking home a Kirkwood lay-off.

Two minutes into the second half, new boy Derek Johnstone scored another tremendous goal, taking a pass from Davie Dodds, he flicked the ball over Welsh's head before hammering home a spectacular third goal.
