First Team Debuts

With Saints under the new stewardship of Billy Stark, this was always going to be a difficult and hard fought cup-tie and that is exactly how it proved to be with Jim Paterson grabbing United's extra-time winner. But it was only Jim Hamilton's equaliser at the death when his half-hit shot deceived
goalkeeper Cuthbert that kept United's interest in the competition. That cancelled out the lead given to the Perth men ten minutes from the break when Darren Dods claimed the credit
for steering in a header, which appeared to come off a United
defender. Earlier Paul Hartley who seems to make a habit of scoring against United since he rejected a move to Tannadice swept home Grant Murray's right-wing cross. That was cancelled out when Steven Thompson rose to score with a superb header from a David Partridge cross. Not only was Jim Hamilton the saviour with his last minute strike, but the substitute also supplied the cross from which Jim
Paterson, who had also come off the bench, headed the decisive goal.
